The Reclusive Potential

Despite my best efforts, I remain somewhat of a loner. Being this reclusive person, in my opinion, is not a bad thing; especially as it would seem that I have done it to myself!

It has been a while since I took the time to sit down and write something for this blog. I have been wrapped up in writing for a motorsport website; something that I enjoy doing, and which will one day give me some income.

I don’t have many friends. I have a lot of acquaintances, but only a handful of people that I would call my friends. Not a bad thing. I like my own company and that of my small family.Β  Sometimes I wonder that if I had a larger circle of friends, my life would be very different? Having a vast circle of friends looks to me like it can be hard work.

I know a few people that have these monster networks of friends, and listening to them talking about these people, it makes me realise that there is the added pressure to maintain those friendships. It must be exhausting.

So, in my opinion, having a small group of people that you can call your friends is preferable to having a sprawling network of people that you kind of know; take a look at some Facebook friends lists of people that you know. I know of people with thousands of “friends” in those lists. But, how many of those people even know that the owner of the said list even exists? It is vacuous bullshit.

My friends are very dear to me, and I value their privacy, and I ask them to do the same for me. By taking the time to remove myself from the likes of Facebook, and soon from Twitter and Instagram, I am helping myself and those around me to find some anonymity in a world where we can peer into anyone’s life, without them even knowing about it.

Remaining anonymous in this day and age is becoming harder and harder to do; just twenty years ago it was easy to blend into the noise of humanity, without worrying about having to meet certain expectations.

I remember the time before the internet when the best way to keep in touch with someone was to write them a letter or call them up on the telephone. I don’t think we will ever get back to anything like that, not unless there is some worldwide crisis that renders all modern communications useless.

But, what I can do is try to form my use of contemporary technology into something similar to what I knew when I was a child. I don’t need to own a smartphone; I don’t have to rely on computers to stay in touch with my fellow humans; I can pick up the landline and make a phone call; I can take out a pen and paper and write; or make some time to visit them.

My priorities have changed over the last few months. My focus needs to be on reducing my debts, reducing my stuff, getting healthier and creating more abundance for my family.

That’s about all I have to say today. I will be taking the time to write here a bit more often, so, until then… adieu.
