School’s Out For Summer

At 2.15 PM today, Karta left school following his first year as a grammar school student. To say he couldn’t wait, was an understatement!

So, we have six weeks to fill. Six weeks of finding fun things to fill our days, well Karta’s days. My job will be the chief facilitator, the person that finances, transports, feeds and takes care of a bored 12-year-old for a month and a half.

First thing first, I need to try to plan at least one or two “things” for us to do each week. Those things will likely include, visiting the skatepark, playing football, visiting museums, going to find skate spots, going to the cinema, day trips to London and more driving across the country in search of skateparks.

I don’t mind the logistical side of catering to Karta’s needs and wants during the summer break. I have always made a point of making sure that he has plenty of things that he can do. The more of those activities that can happen out of doors the better. The last thing that I want is for Karta to be sitting in front of the TV or a computer screen for days on end playing Fortnite, or some other video game.

We will make time to explore the part of the world that we live in a bit more. Kent is a big county, and there are parts of it that I have never seen, let alone spent any time in.

We always enjoy hiking in the woods or walking around the coast, but I’m sure many other parts of the county are worth visiting. I’d quite like to walk along the Crab & Winkle Way, from Whitstable to Canterbury, or visit some of the less well frequented properties in the English Hertitage guidebook. I might even take some time to go swimming in the sea, especially as one of the best beaches in the UK is at the end of my road!

The only thing that might scupper these plans are, as always, a lack of funds and the weather. So with some creative accounting and forward planning, we should be able to have an endless summer, with plenty of time for bonding, after all, this might be Karta’s last summer as a child.

Until next time, adieu.
